Roadworks on the Captain Cook Highway between Cairns and Port Douglas will be shut down across the Christmas break from Friday, December 19.

A pair of single-lane sections with traffic lights will remain in place in the Turtle Beach and Ellis Beach regions, with the works to resume on Monday, January 5 - weather permitting.

“We understand road users will travel extensively over the holiday period and we are reducing traffic control measures as much as safely possible,” a State Government Transport and Main Roads Department (TMR) statement reads.

“There are no scheduled night closures or night works for the remainder of 2025.”

The State Government is aiming to finish most of the reconstruction works by early 2027, but some works may take longer due to the severity of the damage, TMR states.

“With the favourable weather in October and November, the pavement and asphalt repair program for 2025 has been successfully completed ahead of the expected mid-December end date."

At Ellis Beach to south Wangetti, ongoing works include drilling, soil nailing and the revegetation of slopes.

At Turtle Creek Beach, ongoing works include slope-stabilisation drilling of soil nails at the downslope to the north, pavement and resurfacing works, reinstating the guardrail and clearing sites to prepare for more stabilisation works near the beach.
