Daintree Village students mastering the science of winning awards

Daintree State School students are on a roll, taking home two first places in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths competitions.
Most recently, Bailee Weier and Thea Mulley won the Makers Empire, Naturally Brave Competition, competing against schools from across Far North Queensland.
And, not long before that, Grade 4 students Emily Torenbeek and Lara Mulley won first place in the regional Wonder of Science competition.
School principal Jacqui Osborne is proud of the achievements of her budding young scientists.
“Daintree State School students are all making huge strides in their STEM learning,” she says.
Using their STEM skills, Bailee and Thea had to design a solution to an obstacle encountered in a natural disaster.
They chose floods, interviewing locals to investigate problems faced in the 2023/24 floods that devastated the Daintree community.
The pair designed hydropower generators using resources such as 3D printers - and their STEM skills, a subject the small school has recently been focusing on.
Just a few weeks earlier, five Daintree students travelled to James Cook University in Cairns to compete in the Wonder of Science competition, where Emily and Lara won first place at the Grade 4 level.
Not only did they win a trophy, but they will soon head to Brisbane to compete in the state finals against students from across Queensland.
The pair spent weeks designing the “ideal snack for extreme circumstances”, using their STEM skills to test chosen snacks in a variety of conditions.
