A fire at Craiglie which started late last night and approached the northern end of the shops next to the Captain Cook Highway blanketed Port Douglas with thick smoke and threatened lives and property.

An emergency warning was issued at about 3am for Craiglie and Port Douglas residents to stay indoors, keep respiratory medication close by and follow your bushfire survival plan.

“Avoid driving through smoke if you can,” the warning stated.

“Watch out for firefighters working in the area.”

The fire was burning near the Captain Cook Highway and Ferero Road, Craiglie.

It has been largely extinguished now, but fire trucks were still there this afternoon dealing with small flare-ups.
