Port Douglas’s Lazy Lizard Motor Inn has been crowned the state’s best three-to-three-and-a-half star accommodation spot for 2025 at the 40th Queensland Tourism Awards.

The Davidson Street motel beat out other mid-range options from across the state to claim the gold prize, and is now in the running to become the nation’s best at an awards ceremony to be held in Perth in March.

Lazy Lizard co-manager Aidan Mulcahy says the secret to success is in offering guests a holiday to remember.

“It just shows how much effort our team puts into the best guest experience,” Mr Mulcahy says.

“We know all our guests, we know them by name.

“When we see them we call them by their name, we have a chat with them.”

Mr Mulcahy and co-manager Alex Scott try to help guests get the most out of their time in Far North Queensland, including offering inside knowledge on regional hot spots including the Daintree rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef, local wineries, the Atherton Tablelands and Cairns.

They have also installed solar panels and other energy-saving devices to help reduce the Inn’s carbon footprint.

“Because we live where we live, we’re encouraged to do that.”

The Lazy Lizard was not the only FNQ tourism venture to be recognised at the awards.

Reef-protection campaign the Lifetime of Greatness Project won gold for Tourism Marketing and Campaigns and the Daintree Discovery Centre won a silver medal in the Ecotourism category and bronze in the Tourist Attractions award.

Savannah in the Round won silver for Major Festivals and Events and roadtripping website Drive Queensland won bronze for Tourism, Retail, Hire and Services.
