Greedy cane farmers got all that land and still not happy. Give it back to the rightful owners and move on as not yours to begin with but you will end up subdividing it and make millions but once again you’ll still whinge about something see how many of you give it back to the traditional owners. WON'T HOLD MY BREATH ON THIS BUT IT’S MY POINT EXACTLY.

There are a lot of ill formed comments made here. If you don't know the facts, have not worked in the industry, know a farmer or been through a similar situation, then simply shut your mouth. No one needs to hear your negative comments.

With deep regret, I must agree to the fact of witnessing another victim of the NWO agenda falling by the wayside looks like we are going to sell each other's houses as a substitute for production or manufacturing like the rest of Australia, Tourism has no backbone, we are in for a bit of a ride pretty soon. The message highlighting the importance to create great communities and work together makes sense and maybe the sooner the better is actually... better.

Robyn Begg

I hope they can produce more products or Mossman will go down. Very sad. What are all the workers going to do now?

Daniel Reid

Very sad indeed, I would of loved to have done a season up there. I wished the mill could of been saved.

Stephanie Dowdle

A very sad and daunting day for the community. Ex cane farmer's daughter from the area. Can’t imagine the area without cane.

Gayle Samuel

Very sad. An end of an era for Mossman shire. Hopefully the farmers can use land for a viable crop or something.

Deb Warren

End of an era, certainly feel for those families that only know sugar. Must be devastating for them. Wishing everyone the very best during the transition.

Tourism Minister rules out bed tax

Now for the Mayor to listen, the people have spoken.

Moo Man

Time to amalgamate to Cairns council.

Bev Rossignoli

As said by Winston Churchill "I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle". Does the council know who this man was because they clearly do not understand the quote.

So, was the Mayor ‘misprepresented’?

This is ridiculous… from 13 minutes into the speech she starts talking about tourist levies and taxes; and examples of where they’ve been implemented… sounds pretty conclusive to me. Welcome to Douglas Shire, where when the local council can’t squeeze any more cash out of its constituents, and that state moneys slowing down; they tax the tourists too.

Neil Jabs

Such trivial comment by Mayor Scomazzon. The DSC have been pleaded and practically begged for open and honest transparent effective communication all of which has not eventuated still. To claim that ratepayers pay for tourists is laughable. This appears to be a blatant grab for MORE money by the DSC. Perhaps if they could demonstrate responsible budget spending openly as they were elected to do so, might be a positive step forward. Bed tax will certainly deter tourists after they travel up on the damaged road only to be faced with another tax. One sure way to kill off another industry in tourism after we just lost the sugar industry.

Stephen Byrne

LOL. We voted them in. Public servants in general hate being held accountable for their decision and comments. Newsport, please keep up your great work.

Sub editors writing controversial headings get the attention, not listening to lengthy council recordings. Thinking back over the years when the Gazette journo's sat for hours in Council, taking notes, they were half good at getting it right, and sub editors doing headings were reasonably accurate. My guess is Newsport might want to be a bit more careful with headings from now on, but it's not a really hit issue.

Owen Snelten

Sounds like back tracking after feedback.

Dani Dean

Accountability is not the Douglas Shire Council's forefront. Have they walked up and down main street Mossman lately? This evidence is just the tip of the iceberg. The lack of care in the township's longevity and progression is sitting in plain sight. Not even hidden... just gaslighting.
