Climate change, and the denial of it by the Federal Opposition, have contributed to more damage to Far North Queensland roads than may otherwise have occurred, Leichhardt MP Matt Smith has told federal parliament.

During a parliamentary speech this week, our local federal MP said FNQ councils have been hurting from natural disasters, particularly Cyclone Jasper.

“I say to those opposite, climate change is real,” Mr Smith said.

“It’s why things are being damaged more often.

“After a decade of neglect from the former Coalition government, denial on climate action has been hurting our road infrastructure.”

Mr Smith said his government is now “delivering record investment” into the regional road system, which included $210m for the Kuranda Range Road, $245m for the Barron River Bridge on the Kennedy Highway and $38m for Cape York access roads.

“You can drive for three days across my electorate on all sorts of roads to get to all sorts of places, and I thoroughly recommend you do it, because Far North Queensland is the best place in Australia,” Mr Smith told the parliament.
