Helping make walking to school that little bit easier
Shire education
If you live near a Douglas Shire school and need work done on your footpaths, you may be in luck.
Douglas Shire Council is aiming to improve walker access to schools across the district, with Snapper Island Drive at Wonga Beach, Ulysses Avenue at Craiglie, and Endeavour Street in Port Douglas, three of the streets identified as most in need of works such as footpaths and raised crossings.
The St Crispins footpath in Port Douglas and the Alexandra Bay State School path in Diwan have recently been completed as part of the project.
“We know how important safe walking routes are to our community,” DSC Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said.
“These upgrades will make a real difference and respond to what locals have been asking for.”
Funding for the improved school-access projects is available through a State Government grant program.
A report tabled in this week’s council meeting states: “Douglas Shire Council has identified critical gaps in the local footpath network, particularly along school routes, which have raised significant community concern regarding child safety.”
