After her partner Gavin had a stroke at the age of just 52, Dixie Wells knew she had to stand up on her own two feet and help out as best she could.

So Dixie, of Julatten, has started raising money for the Stroke Foundation.

After a series of strokes, Gavin was rushed to Cairns Hospital, where he spent five days, and is still battling ongoing brain fog, fatigue, and memory problems.

Beginning as a simple headache and tingling in his arm, Gavin’s strokes are a wake-up call for all people to learn the signs.

Dixie says, if she had known more about how to detect a stroke, she would have taken him to hospital sooner.

“He thought it was just a migraine or the result of a long week at work,” Dixie says.

“He didn’t want to worry me, and I didn’t realise how serious it was.”

Starting this month, Dixie has raised $640 in the Stride4Stroke annual fundraiser event, where entrants are encouraged to walk, run, swim, dance or ride to attract donations.

Dixie is aiming  this month to reach 900 moving minutes and raise $950.

For details on how to donate to Stride4Stroke, go to stride4stroke.org.au.
