A new up-to-$5m Nautilus helicopter base minutes from the centre of Port Douglas is expected to be open in the first few months of next year, adding a new dimension to the region’s tourism credentials.

Nautilus Aviation chief executive Aaron Finn said yesterday work is now well underway following years of planning - and a few weeks of unseasonal rain.

“It’s been close to three years now we’ve been going through the process, so, we’ve ticked all the boxes, environmental, and from a noise perspective, along the way,” Mr Finn said.

“It’s been a long time coming.

“So we’re just happy to get going.”

Mr Finn said he was aiming to open in the first quarter of 2027, with 30-40 jobs being created during the construction phase.

The project, which is now estimated to be worth $4.5m-$5m, will be a positive for the town, he said.

“It will connect with the waterfront precinct there and Quicksilver at the marina, so it will be a lot easier with the staff to get people back and forwards between the boats and the helis,” he said.

“We’re not going between multiple properties.”

The company currently leases three separate spaces in and around Port Douglas, so this will bring the whole operation under one roof owned by Nautilus.

“It will be a good investment for Port Douglas,” Mr Finn said.

“We’re a little bit closer to the town here.

“Everyone will see the heli departures out to the Reef, scenic flights as well.

“It will also help with transfers to and from Cairns with the airport, people can come straight into town rather than having to go to the airfield.”

With a more permanent presence in the town, the company is also looking at further local cash investment, including at the nearby Port Douglas Crocs AFL football team.

Nautilus Port Douglas base manager Rhiannon Barber said the new centre would bring her team of six closer together.

“It’s just the consolidation really, because we are having to operate out of three locations,” Ms Barber said.

“We’ve got our office in the Sheraton, we’ve got our helipad across the road from that, and we’ve also got our airfield location.

“So having the whole team brought together in that one spot is going to really be good for our ability to work more closely, tightening it together.”

She said the company was also doing more transfers from Cairns airport, including a family of nine recently.

“So we should be able to accommodate that sometimes if necessary because of the large area we’ve got,” she said.

“Definitely transfers are hyping up, people coming up here, they’ve got money, and they don’t want to sit on that road with all the roadworks.”

The new helicopter base on the waterfront south precinct area near Marano’s Fuel will include two landing pads, a hangar, and office space on a close-to-5000sq m site on Port Street.

The choppers will be taking off and approaching from over Dickson’s Inlet.
