Entire community invited to lace up or cheer at Run Port Douglas

With just three weeks to go, excitement is building for Run Port Douglas on Saturday, September 5. Set along one of the world’s most scenic coastal courses, the event is a standout highlight on the local calendar - and the entire community is invited to take part.
With 2km, 5km, 10km, and Half Marathon options, there is a distance for every age and fitness level. Every participant who crosses the finish line on Four Mile Beach will collect an official finisher's medal.
The 2km distance is an ideal outing for families. Parents registered in any of the longer races can also run or walk alongside their children in the 2km event using their existing race bib at no extra cost.
In addition to their medal, participating kids will receive a McDonald’s Encouragement Award paired with a free Happy Meal voucher.
Event organiser Bade Stapleton said he hopes to see the whole town turn out for the occasion, whether on the course or cheering from the sidelines.
“Whether you're running, walking, or holding up a sign to cheer people on, this day is for the whole town,” Mr Stapleton said.
The festivities extend well beyond the racecourse, transforming the closed Esplanade into a vibrant beachfront hub.
Visitors can enjoy food trucks, live music, and seating, plus race commentary from Channel 7’s Mark Beretta, Triple M’s Tammy Barker, and 7 Cairns’ Ainsley Woods.
Prizes for spectators and participants
Great Barrier Reef trips with Quicksilver Cruises are up for grabs across several competition categories.
Spectators can win for best cheering sign and most entertaining crowd cheering, while runners and walkers can compete for best-dressed individual, best-dressed team, and most entertaining finish-line crossing.
Volunteers Needed
With more than 3,000 participants traveling from across Australia, organisers are calling on local groups, individuals, and volunteers to help support the event.
Volunteer shifts run four to six hours across 4 and 5 September for roles including:

Registration and bag drop

Aid station and course support

Start and finish line assistance

Merchandise sales and road marshalling
Volunteers receive a free t-shirt, refreshments, and entry into prize draws. In addition, organisers will donate $50 per volunteer, per shift directly to a chosen local charity, club, or community group.
Traffic updates and access
Motorists and residents should plan for minor, temporary traffic management measures on race morning.
The Captain Cook Highway will not be impacted, and all local road closures will reopen by 10.00am on Saturday, September 5.
Port Douglas Road and Davidson Street will experience delays between 6.00am and 9.00am due to single-lane, one-way traffic flow, though access into town remains open throughout.
