Wonga Beach State School students have wasted no time diving into 2026, kicking off the year with a Shrove Tuesday pancake breakfast, their first major excursion to the Cairns Sports Spectacular and the introduction of a new whole-school literacy program.

The smell of fresh pancakes and the sound of music filled the school grounds on Tuesday morning as families joined students and staff to mark Shrove Tuesday, an event Principal Anita Cubit said set a positive tone for the term ahead.

Students have also travelled to Cairns to take part in a range of sports and skill-building activities led by regional development officers, an opportunity Ms Cubit said was particularly valuable for a small coastal school.

“Experiences like this allow our students to try sports and activities they might not otherwise access and build confidence outside the classroom,” she said.

Back in the classroom, a new spelling and literacy program has been introduced across all year levels to strengthen reading and writing foundations, with students settling into new routines for the year.

The school’s early-years pathway, including playgroup, KindyLinq and kindy, continues to provide a transition into primary school for local families.

Ms Cubit said the strong start followed a year of solid achievements in 2025.

“With the initiatives already in place and more planned, 2026 is shaping up to be another rewarding year for our students and community,” she said.
