A packed Port Douglas Community Hall crowd on Friday night witnessed long-time volunteer and educator Bev Gwynne crowned Douglas Shire’s Citizen of the Year.

Other major award winners on the night included Forever Reef Project founder Dean Miller (Environmental Achievement Award) and recycling legend Bruce Ferguson (Senior Citizen of the Year).

Bev has committed much of her life to providing for the Shire community through her support of schools, sports clubs and health-support groups, giving countless hours of service.

“I am very honoured for this award, thank you to the people who nominated me,” she told Newsport.

Living in the area since 1971, Bev said Douglas Shire was one of the best places to live in the world.

“It is a wonderful community and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

“People pull together when times are tough and always help one another, it’s really great.”

Bev’s community service includes: Committee work with the Cancer Council; More than five years as a Cardiac Challenge support driver; Organising the region’s first Breast Cancer Classic Walk, and; Coordinating multiple Biggest Morning Tea events.

Her professional career reflects the same commitment.

Bev spent nine years as a TAFE childcare teacher, eight as a daycare and kindy teacher (including as director of the Sheraton creche), completed a Primary Education degree, then taught at local schools.

Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said Bev’s enduring service has touched nearly every corner of the Douglas community, making her a deeply deserving Citizen of the Year.

“Bev Gwynne is the embodiment of true community service,” she said.

“For decades, she has quietly dedicated herself to supporting others - across education, sport, health, and community life - without ever seeking recognition.

“Her contribution has shaped generations, and her impact will be felt for years to come.”
