BUSINESS FEATURE

From humble beginnings as a one-man operation working out of a trailer, On the Spot Signs Port Douglas has grown into a trusted local business that has spent the past 20 years helping businesses stand out, get noticed and tell their story.

Founded by owner Andrew Renwick in 2005, the business began with little more than a mobile setup and basic equipment.

By 2006, growing demand saw it move into a small shopfront, which has since evolved into the fully equipped signage and print workshop locals know today on Warner Street.

A long-time member of the Port Douglas community since the days when the town was home to just a few hundred residents, Andrew has owned the local fish market, published the Port Douglas Gazette and served with the Mossman Fire Brigade.

Yet it is On the Spot Signs he is most proud of, a business built steadily, locally and on long-standing relationships.

Beyond signage

From shopfront signs and A-frames to lightboxes, vinyl banners and flute signs, the company’s work has become a familiar sight throughout Port Douglas, Mossman and surrounding communities.

As the business has grown, so too has its offering.

In recent years, On the Spot Signs has expanded its printing services, allowing clients to source both signage and marketing materials in one place.

Business cards, brochures, menus, posters, flyers, catalogues and even wedding stationery are now produced in-house.

The dream team

A key part of On the Spot Signs’ growth is its small, hands-on team, working closely with clients from concept through to installation.

Sierra works as a graphic designer for the business, holding an undergraduate degree in graphic design, and often welcomes clients at reception where she helps develop their ideas.

Most locals will know Charlie, the shop’s full-time in-house installer, a familiar smiling face around town with no project too big, or too small, to take on.

Overseeing day-to-day operations is Georgia, who manages projects from start to finish, drawing on her background in signage and print from an exhibition displays company.

“What stood out to me when I started here three years ago was how closely we work with our local community,” Georgia said.

“We support businesses at every stage, from start-ups bringing new ideas to life to established clients refreshing their brand.”

Being a small business, Georgia says, is their secret weapon.

The team takes the time to listen, guide decisions and create signage built to perform in the region’s harsh, but beautiful, environment, while offering practical alternatives when budget matters.

That local-first approach extends behind the scenes, with all equipment and products sourced within Australia, 95 per cent from Queensland suppliers, many of them local.

“Our clients know exactly who they’re dealing with, and we offer free quoting, measuring and design, flexible timeframes and honest advice,” she said.

“We truly aim to be your friendly neighbourhood sign shop.”
