Push for Port Douglas pool hall gathering steam
Shire entertainment
Port Douglas may be getting a brand new pool hall above the Wicked Ice Cream shop on Macrossan Street.
The company behind the plan, Delu Nominees, wants to put 10 eight-ball tables and a bar into the second-storey centre, with opening hours set to be from 10am to 10pm, seven days a week.
“The proposal will contribute positively to the vibrancy, economy and tourism appeal of the Port Douglas town centre by offering an additional recreational activity for both residents and visitors,” a report submitted to the Douglas Shire Council planning authority states.
“The site benefits from established on-site and on-street parking, high walkability, and strong access to shuttle transport and nearby short-term accommodation.”
Newsport understands one aspect of the plan is to help attract district-wide pool competitions to the region, which cannot be played now because there are no venues with four or more pool tables.
If approved, the “dedicated indoor pool hall” will feature “competition-grade tables, coaching opportunities, and a small ancillary bar service area”, according to the plans.
The total size of the new venue is expected to be close to 200sq m.
“The development is intended to operate as a recreational and social venue catering to both local residents and visiting patrons,” the plans state.
DSC planning officers will consider the application across coming months.
