Douglas Shire residents and surrounding councils are today counting the costs of a wild weekend of heavy rain, with multiple incidents across the region requiring rapid responses from emergency services.

And the deluge may not be over yet, with more heavy rain predicted this week as another tropical low approaches the region.

Weekend incidents included:

-A person rescued from the roof of a car near the Foxton Bridge in Mossman after becoming stranded in floodwaters on Saturday night.

-residents isolated in multiple regions including Wonga and Cooya beaches, Cape Tribulation and Daintree Village as rivers cut off access routes.

-reports of homes needing emergency sandbagging after water inundation in a host of regions including Port Douglas, Wonga, Cooya, Mossman and the Daintree Rainforest.

-drinking water cut off across multiple Port Douglas locations on Sunday,

-multiple rivers over roads including Mossman River, McLeod River, Bushy Creek and Crees Creek, and;

-Port Douglas Market cancelled due to the wild weather.

Douglas Shire Council and Cook MP David Kempton have advised residents north of the Daintree River that the temporary passenger ferry service will be closed until at least midday today as the mop-up continues.

“The morning passenger ferry and bus service, including the school bus, will not operate tomorrow morning (Monday),” the release stated.

“An assessment of operating conditions, including approaches and landing areas, will be carried out as early as possible in the morning.

“If it is safe to do so, the ferry service will resume at midday.”

A further update is expected at 10am.

Multiple regions across the Shire recorded up to 400mm of rain during the weekend, which fell most heavily on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Saturday night rainfalls included more than 200mm at Rex Creek and Mossman and about 180mm at Yandilli and Bairds.
