If the road is smashed apart, forget it!
FNQ weather
The damaged state of a Wujal Wujal road after floodwaters had cleared has shone a spotlight on the importance of being extra careful when driving on flooded thoroughfares in Far North Queensland.
Authorities are consistently reminding commuters that “if it’s flooded, forget it”, but other FNQ drivers have said many people do not have a choice when faced with difficult decisions during flood events.
“People north of here drive through floodwater regularly or we would never get home,” regular columnist Lawrence Mason commented last week.
However, earlier this month, heavy rain caused flooding near the Bloomfield Bridge at Wujal Wujal, and after the floods cleared, the road beneath the water was heavily damaged, according to photos taken by Queensland Reconstruction Authority workers.
“The river peaked at 2.1 metres above Bloomfield Bridge, and the approaches to the bridge have sustained significant damage,” the QRA stated.
“Funding from the Queensland and Australian Governments has been activated to support local disaster response and repairs for Wujal Wujal and 48 other local government areas in response to this year's severe weather.
“Stay alert and stay safe Queensland.”
QRA post reader Doug Ewings stated: “And that, people, is why you don't drive through floodwater.
“You don't know what's not under it.”
In Mossman, a car became stranded on Foxton Avenue on the weekend after the driver drove through what appeared to be a large puddle, only to find the water was much deeper than expected.
Police continue to remind drivers: "if it's flooded, forget it".
