The old cane-train rail network will be repurposed for a new bike-and-walking trail between Mossman and Port Douglas if Douglas Shire Council can find some State or Federal Government money to fund the project.

The trail would become a further extension of the 94km Wangetti Trail from Palm Cove to Port Douglas, last week’s DSC meeting heard.

Mayor Lisa Scomazzon told the meeting she fully supported the plan, as did all the other councillors.

“I think this is great for our Shire,” she said.

“(It can) link up to the Wangetti Trail.”

Shire staff are applying for cash to fund the project through the State Government’s Active Transport Grants Program.

One councillor who has been fully supporting the idea is Cr Abigail Noli.

“Douglas Shire - get ready! Something BIG is coming and this is something to get excited about because I really am,” she posted online.

“Douglas residents - the rail trail is more than a path.

“It’s connection. It's lifestyle. It’s safety. It’s tourism.

“Let’s get behind this!”
