TMR on the right path with memorial mystery investigation
Mystery Memorial
Transport and Main Roads Queensland have been praised on social media for efforts to try to find out more information about a memorial overlooking Pebbly Beach before dismantling it and proceeding with construction works.
Posted last week, TMR asks: “Can you help us find someone?’’.
“We're looking for the owner of this memorial near Captain Cook Highway.
“It’s a driftwood cross, with no name inscribed on it, overlooking Pebbly Beach, 14km south of Port Douglas.
“The memorial currently sits in the footprint of construction works.
“If you have any information, please contact us on 1800 187 937 or email [email protected].’'
The post has been widely shared and attracted plenty of response, with the overwhelming consideration being that it is a memorial for a pet.
“I would think it’s probably someone’s pet who passed,’’ said Jan Parish.
“I'd say it's someone's pet. I do know of someone else burying their cat in bushland at a beach up that way,’’ added Cheryl Squire-Farrelly.
Sime Coomb said he had buried his beloved dog at the beach in similar fashion “but that’s definitely not my old mate’’.
Greg Spencer felt he knows the story behind the memorial: “It’s a dog that was skittled when people stopped at the rocks I seem to recall.’’
But David Motbey believes it is not remains but a marker of the favourite spot of an old farmer from the area.
Preacha Harley had a suggestion for the pebble piled memorial.
“Without positive proof, relocate the remains of the dog to a hillside where it can catch the morning sun!!!’’
The effort made by TMR to understand the story has turned the tables a little on the usual comments the road maintenance authority cop.
“Can I just say I love the fact that they are asking before removing it,’’ Jess Angel said.
