Bobby the Dachshund has been missing since escaping a Cooya Beach backyard overnight on October 2 and making what seemed a bid to get to his home at Craiglea.

While the one-year-old sausage dog was spotted once in the canefields adjacent Cook Highway during the first day of his disappearance, there has been no word of the much loved little dog since.

COMMUNITY HUNT

But that has not meant his family and friends have given up hope for finding him. While devastated at the loss, with an acceptance it is not looking good for Bobby, incredible stories of survival by Dachshunds, including one here in the Douglas region, mean a miracle could still happen.

In December 2024, 10-year-old sausage dog Slinky survived 13 days in rugged rainforest country before returning home to owner Amanda Haines at her Julatten home.

READ THE STORY

“The chances of a tiny, 5kg Dachshund surviving out there weren’t really in his favour,’’ Amanda said when Slinky made it home

“But somehow he has been able to Bear Grylls it!

“Our area is home to cassowaries, snakes and large pythons and goannas and as the days passed, it seemed impossible that he could still be alive. Something has had a go at him… it looks like a goanna possibly.’’

While remarkable, Slinky’s story is not the greatest of sausage dog survival stories. Valerie the Dachshund spent 529 days lost in the Kangaroo Island wilderness before being caught and reunited with her owners in May 2025. She now is the subject of a book on her “adventures”.
