Selecting a standout story of the year for Newsport is no easy task, but when pressed to choose, one tale from August takes the lead. It revolves around Rod Slater, a seasoned adventurer hailing from Montana, USA, who achieved remarkable feats both on land and water.

Rod, on his way to circumnavigating the globe on his trusty Valiant 40 sailboat, the Vela Dare from Seattle, Washington, found respite at Crystalbrook Marina in Port Douglas. However, sailing is just one of Rod's mastered modes of transport.

In his fabulous book, 'Two Years on Two Wheels,' he recounts a thrilling two-year journey on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Living out of saddlebags, a tent, and a sleeping bag, he traversed from one hemisphere to another, experiencing the thrill of the open road.

His ambitious trip took him from New Zealand's North Island to the iconic USA Route 66 and West Coast, before returning to the South Island of New Zealand.

Then, he made his way through the East Coast of the United States, covering all 48 states in the process. Rod shared with Newsport, “I had a Harley-Davidson Super Glide 2009 in New Zealand and a Heritage 2005 in the States.

Then I came to Australia and rode the East Coast, including the Gold Coast, on a Harley as well." Impressively, he rode over 73,000 kilometres, earning the prestigious title of winner in the Australasian Harley Owners Group ABC competition. Rod’s book is available on Amazon with a paperback edition and Kindle (link below this article).

Rod's life has been diverse and intriguing, spanning various professions and employments. Starting as a cowboy in Montana, he spent a decade as a railroad conductor before venturing into construction.

Further, he delved into architecture, practicing his craft in multiple countries, and transitioned into the realm of artistry. His boat paintings are simply brilliant.

Having sailed over 50,000 nautical miles, approximately half of those solo, Rod’s passion for exploration and adventure is evident.

“It’s a very satisfying experience to do it on your own and navigate, but it puts you in perspective of the Universe because you’re very small in that vast ocean," he said.

"In fact, I say you can’t go to sea really without believing in God because everything is so perfect when you’re out there."

Inspires everyone.

Rod’s story is a testament to the spirit of exploration, determination, and an unwavering passion for embracing life's diverse opportunities. As he sailed out of Port Douglas, reflecting on his extensive journey on two wheels, he continues to inspire others to embark on their own adventures and make the most of the world around them.
