A taxi driver working the graveyard shift has fled from his car after an attempted armed robbery on a major local roadway.

At around 2.45am the driver had picked up a 34-year-old man and a 14 year old teenager from Whiterock Caravan Park before the pair asked to be taken into Cairns city.

Along Ray Jones Drive Police said the pair allegedly produced knives and threatened the driver.

Police said the driver then immediately stopped his taxi, took his car keys and bolted, before the pair then allegedly stole his night’s takings and wallet before running towards Lyon Street.

Police confirmed the pair were arrested a short time later.

A 34-year-old White Rock man was charged with one count each of armed robbery, stealing and trespass.
