In the few minutes Newsport was at the intersection of Owen and Mowbray Streets in Port Douglas, six cars in a row went through the stop sign without stopping. Video: Paul Makin

A traffic stop sign means just that, STOP. The law says you must do it. It makes sense, because apart from good driver conduct, it might just save your life and the lives of your passengers. It’s common sense to come to a halt at a stop sign, right?

Well, there’s a lot of drivers in Port that don’t possess that common sense.Locals and visitors alike are breaking the law every single hour of every single day at the corner of Owen and Mowbray Streets. Newsport set up a camera at the stop sign and were able to film vehicle after vehicle driving through the intersection, ignoring the stop sign. The video that comes with this story is not the result of hours of filming.

It was recoded in just minutes. What you’ll see on the video is a blatant disregard for road rules and safety. However, there was a silver lining when one local real estate vehicle and driver showed the others what they SHOULD be doing. Congratulations to the driver of the LJ Hooker car who did it by the book and showed up the dills. Thank you Mr Hooker!

You must stop

At a stop sign you must come to a complete stop and obey the give way rules and if you don’t, it’s hundreds of dollars out of your bank account. But it’s not just a monetary consideration, it’s protecting your fellow drivers and passengers from harm. Port Douglas top cop Damian Meadows reckons it’s a ‘killing field’ for Police “If people want to talk about revenue raising, these drivers are their own worst enemy, this is a total disregard for road rules and the number of tickets that are written at that intersection is beyond belief and people continue to do it, it’s the worst one in the district,” said Sgt Meadows. He and other law enforcement officers are pleading with drivers to wake up to themselves and obey the stop sign.

More than just money

Failure to come to a complete stop at a stop sign will cost you a fine of $431 and 3 demerit points. If I’d been a cop and not a journo, I could have raked in $2,586 for the Government coffers in the few minutes I spent at the intersection. Handing your hard earned to the Government is tough enough, but let’s face it, it might end up costing you a lot more than that, if you’re involved in a crash.

Thank you!
