In a thrilling display of aquatic prowess, underwater hockey club the Mossman Manta Rays, made their debut in the much anticipated North Queensland Titles.

The club exceeded expectations by reaching the final and securing a commendable second place. Meanwhile, their talented junior team clinched the first position in the tournament.

Underwater hockey club the Mossman Manta Rays, entered its first competition at the end of April and managed to make the final and came second whilst their juniors came first.

According to Sean Hartey, coach of the Mossman Manta Rays, the competition exceeded all expectations with its awe-inspiring display of skill and camaraderie.

“Teams hailing from Cooktown to Townsville, including a team from Brisbane, united for
a fierce competition,” he said.

A thrilling debut

For a significant number of Mossman players, this event marked their very first foray into the world of competitive underwater hockey.

"Our club took on the challenge of the B Grade division, predominantly composed of players with six months or less of experience,” Mr Hartey said. “A shout-out to those exceptional individuals who joined the team with less than a month of play.

“Unfamiliar with the competitive arena, the team faced local rivals such as the Tablelands Turtles, combined with the Townsville Tiger Sharks, and the Cairns Painted Crays.

“Throughout the double round robin matches, the Mossman Mantas demonstrated exceptional resilience, tallying two losses, a victory, and a draw.

“Their remarkable performance secured a remarkable second-place finish in the B Grade, narrowly trailing the Turtles who claimed the overall victory, while the Crays settled
for third.

“Placing second in their debut competition was an incredible and immensely enjoyable experience for the Mossman Mantas.”

Challenges and teamwork

Mr Hartey said that, buoyed by their success on the opening day, the Mossman players eagerly anticipated the next day's challenges, eager to make further contributions to their teams.

“On the second day, the teams were reshuffled into a Potluck Competition, drawing
names from a winning cup,” Mr Hartey said.

“This format provided a unique opportunity for everyone to play alongside new teammates from different regions, fostering an exchange of experiences, tips, and tricks.

“As the Mantas were divided, their members achieved outstanding first and third-place finishes in their respective tournaments.

“The weekend brimmed with exhilaration and joy as all participants revealed in the spirit of
the event, leaving with a profound sense of pride and accomplishment.

“With eyes fixed on future tournaments, we eagerly anticipate our club’s continued growth and improvement in the sport.”
