Douglas United Dragons carried on their winning ways on Friday night with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Mareeba in Far North Community Division One soccer.

The Dragons controlled the play for long periods of the game, but were wasteful in front of goal, scoring their one on-target strike in the 31st minute of the first half.

This Friday night Douglas United is away to top team Southside Comets - the Dragons were sitting third before last week’s game.

AFL Cairns

The undefeated Port Douglas Crocs had another strong win on Saturday, beating Cairns Saints by 82 points.

The Saints actually led at quarter time by four points in a combined 13-goal quarter, but after that it was all the Crocs, with the final score 24.18 (162) to 12.8 (80).

Best for Port Douglas were Murphy Short, Jacob Zboril, Max Hemphill, Wally Thomson, Peter Megee and Ben McPhee.

This week the Crocs are home to Cairns Cutters in a top-of-the-table clash from 2pm at the Croc Pit.

The women also had a gutsy three-point victory thanks to some straight kicking, winning 3.1 (19) to 1.10 (16).

Michelle Waldron, Chelsey Drumm, Hannah Gullane, Aoifey Whyte, Ella Jones and Georgia Walker were best.

The women’s game on Saturday starts at 4.45pm following the men’s match.

Netball

The finals of the Douglas Netball Association Senior Competition are set to take place in July.

The DNA organisers would love to see members of the community go down to the Port Douglas courts and support the players each Tuesday evening.

Enjoy some great netball, catch up with friends, and grab a bite to eat or a cold drink from the canteen while you're there.

Rugby union

Port Douglas was no match for top team JCU Mariners on the weekend, going down 10-31 at home.

Angus Welsh scored the only try.

This Saturday the Reef Raiders take on Barron Trinity Bulls at home from 4pm.

Rugby league

Bottom-placed Mossman Sharks lost to Innisfail Leprechauns 6-34 on the weekend, with Ash Kris Ketchell scoring the team’s only try.

This Saturday the Sharks play second-bottom team Yarrabah at home from 6pm in what is shaping up as their best chance for a win so far this season, so get out and show your support on the weekend if you can make the game.

The improving Sharks women lost to the Leprechauns 20-38 last weekend, with Aydah Ross Kelly, Cheyanne Yamashita, Raelee Singleton and Keasharn Sands-Hart all running in tries.

The women’s game this weekend starts at 3pm in another chance for a potential rare win.
