In a tight-knit community like Port Douglas, co-workers often transform into extended family, offering support through life's most significant moments. Adam Howell’s journey at Lure Restaurant is a great example of one such heartwarming tale.

As Mr Howell’s remarkable seven-year tenure at Lure came to a close, with five of those years in the role of restaurant manager, a new chapter awaits him.

He's setting off on a journey to Townsville to pursue a lifelong dream of joining the police academy.

Mr Howell’s story began as a backpacker from Ireland, and Port Douglas became his final destination where he met his now-wife, Jess.

The team at Lure has been there to witness Mr Howell’s life milestones unfold, from his engagement and marriage to Jess, the birth of their two boys, Archie and Ollie, to building their first home and building a life out here in Australia.

Reflecting on these significant moments, Adam expressed deep gratitude for Kelly Caughey, owner of the restaurant, as well as the rest of the Lure team, who have stood by him throughout.

He emphasised the sense of family at Lure, where everyone looks out for one another, both on and off the job. “It’s such a family-orientated restaurant and I’m very grateful for all the opportunities and amazing years I’ve had working there thanks to Kelly.”

Mr Howell’s departure from Lure Restaurant & Bar marks a bittersweet transition.

As Mr Howell sets his sights on the Police Academy in Townsville, he acknowledges mixed feelings about leaving after such a significant period. “I’ll miss the daily camaraderie and the laughter with the team,” he admitted.

Respected member of the team

Kelly Caughey expressed heartfelt sentiments about Adam’s departure from the team.

She praised Adam for his strong leadership, problem-solving skills, and an ability to thrive under pressure.

“He was a versatile team player, equally adept in the kitchen and front of house,” she said.

“It was always a bit of a joke that he could make a perfect coffee but never drank coffee himself.

“Adam is not only respected for his hard work but also loved for his sense of humour. His Irish spirit brought a lot of 'craic' to our team.

“I am super happy and extremely proud of Adam for all his achievements. This has been a long-awaited dream for him, with 10 months of preparation and finally being accepted into the academy.

“I personally will miss Adam greatly as well as Jess and the boys as they are part of our Lure family. We will continue to catch up with them and I can’t wait to hear all about his new adventures as a police officer. The staff will all miss Adam but they are all happy for him and we all wish him luck.

“He will undoubtedly make a brilliant police officer. I just said now if you ever see me coming don’t point that radar at me. Just remember who was good to you Adam. To which he responded for $50 I’ll drive you home.

"We've had a lot of fun together with Adam leading the team, from Christmas parties to birthdays, weddings, and race days. Tomorrow night, we'll have one final 'staff meeting' with Adam and the team to bid him farewell and wish him well. As Adam would say, ‘Aschoonermatata’.”
