“The great thing about being older is the freedom to be your authentic self.” - Catherine Quinn

There's no denying that our picturesque seaside haven is a cherished retirement paradise. With its breathtaking scenic beauty and serene beaches, it's an ideal place to embrace life's golden chapter. Yet, retirement offers much more than meets the eye. It's a phase where numerous seniors discover a profound sense of purpose through volunteering, contributing meaningfully to our community.

Meet Catherine Quinn, a true busy-bee.

She dedicates her time to the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, where she tirelessly attends the reception desk, sews boomerang bags for sale in the Nik-Nak Shed, and diligently works at the shed sorting and pricing donated items.

Beyond that, she's also a full member of the Port Douglas Country Women's Association, a group of skilled volunteers who generously share their talents to benefit the community.

Originally from Newcastle, Catherine's journey led her to Port Douglas as she and her husband embarked on a cross-country motorhome adventure following their retirement.

Catherine firmly believes that volunteering is an integral part of the Australian way of life, deeply ingrained in our ethos.

“It adds significant value to one's life, and, moreover, it's our collective responsibility to step up and lend a hand,” she emphasises.

“Volunteering is tremendously rewarding and keeps me connected to the community, providing the satisfaction of making a positive difference to society. When you are not working for money, you are beholden to no one, allowing you to pursue the things in life that make you happy.”

Vicki and her husband Peter, who are also dedicated volunteers at the Centre, can attest to this perspective.

Having relocated from the mid North Coast of NSW to our little piece of paradise just over two years ago in search of retirement and a more relaxed lifestyle, they have found that volunteering has enriched their lives.

Vicki actively contributes by volunteering at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre playgroup once a week and dedicating two shifts to the NikNak Shed.

She shared that she thrives on volunteering and cherishes the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals, finding her role immensely rewarding.

And of course, in their free time the duo, accompanied by their beloved dog Henri, relishes the opportunity to embark on RV adventures, exploring the multitude of incredible campsites in our expansive and breathtaking FNQ backyard.

MEANTIME IN OTHER SENIOR NEWS…

Spreading Christmas cheer ahead of schedule

Why wait for December to celebrate Christmas? Residents at Kubirri Aged Care Centre took the rebellious route by indulging in a very-early Christmas feast.

The festive feast featured mouth watering roast beef, succulent turkey, and honey-roasted ham that had everyone's taste buds dancing with delight. And, of course, what's Christmas without the beloved plum pudding to satisfy those sweet cravings?

The Centre went full out complete with cheerful red and white Christmas decorations. Tables were set with bon-bons, and there was laughter all around as residents and staff eagerly cracked them open, trading jokes and sprinkling even more joy into the festivities.
