On Sunday, August 18, the Palmer Sea Reef Golf Course was graced with a picture-perfect “Winter” day as it hosted the Annual Brian Sorensen Cup. This year’s event witnessed a record 104 players, all eager to swing their clubs for a cause, as they aimed to raise funds for local clubs and groups in the Douglas Shire.

Now in its 16th year, the tournament saw an exciting shift this time around with the partnership of Next Green Group, a national green energy provider. This collaboration proved to be a perfect match for the event. Led by local residents Ryan O’Hare and Dean Scadding, along with CEO David Hayes, Next Green Group provided ample support to the Salsa Sorensen Association, aiming to enhance the charity’s profile and strengthen its ties with the local community.

The record field featured a dynamic mix of male and female teams teed off with a shotgun start at 10:30 AM. The Par-Tee Marquee hosted by Next Green Group added to the festivities, offering entertainment and refreshments that kept spirits high and energy levels up with their vibrant music and lively dance moves.

This year, the organisation of the event was further elevated through the digital platform Golf Genius, allowing for real-time tournament scores. Intriguingly, after the 13th hole, scores went dark for the players, creating an air of suspense, while spectators in the clubhouse were treated to the unfolding drama of the competition.

Reflecting the community's generosity, this year saw a record number of applications for funding, with over 16 groups requesting more than $56,000 in support. Thanks to the collective contributions from local businesses and individuals, Salsa Sorensen donated an impressive $26,001 to seven local groups and clubs, providing a much-needed boost to the community.
