In a fascinating development the race to become Douglas Shire Mayor has now officially become a three horse race following a final nomination just seconds before today’s midday nomination deadline.

Newsport can reveal former Port Douglas recycling director Stacy Wilkinson has confirmed his intention to run for the top job, joining Lisa Scomazzon and David Haratsis in the race for the centre chamber chair.

Mr Wilkinson, who spoke exclusively to Newsport just seconds ago said his nomination was a “last minute decision” but one that he’s very excited about.

“I’ve lived in the Douglas Shire for 10 years and I’m very passionate about the region,” he said.

“I’m genuinely interested in representing the local community, nothing more than that. I don’t have any hidden political ambitions or agendas. I’ve put my name forward because I feel I have what it takes to advocate for the Douglas Shire.

“I’m particularly passionate about waste and rates reduction. I’m also very aware how important ongoing roads and water infrastructure is to the Douglas Shire.”

Mr Wilkinson closed his business in late October last year.

Meantime, the Councillor race also hotted up just seconds before today’s deadline, with Peter Wood and Pia McKeown both throwing their hat into the ring to snag a Councillor chair.

Newsport first reported a number of months ago that it was a distinct possibility to have a couple in Pia and Peter McKeown sitting side by side as future Councillors at Douglas Shire Council.

That potential scenario has hypothetically moved a step closer following Ms McKeown’s nomination.

There was no nomination from outgoing Mayor Michael Kerr.

The local Government elections will be held on March 16.

Councillor nominations: Bill Allison, Chris Barber, Sara Mulcahy, Abigail Noli, Peter Wood, Jeremy Blockey, Roy Zammataro, Michael Joseph, Damian Meadows, Terry Melchert, Peter McKeown, Pia McKeown

Mayoral nominations: Lisa Scomazzon, David Haratsis, Stacy Wilkinson
