The Port Douglas Rugby Club has appointed Richard Johnston as its new head coach ahead for the 2024 season.

The Port Douglas Rugby Club have appointed Richard Johnston as their new head coach ahead of the 2024 season.

Johnston; who was assistant coach under the departing Stan Afeaki, takes on the main coaching role with Peter Gilmour and Luke Edwards the new assistant coaches.

Port Douglas Rugby Club President Travis Gooch said 2024 is shaping up to be a big year for the club, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary after its establishment in 2000.

“It’s an exciting time for the club, we have a new coaching team, the clubhouse is currently under renovation and a 25 year reunion will take place from May 3-5," Gooch told Newsport.

“The response to date for the reunion has been awesome. We have had people book flights from all over Australia, NZ & Canada to come back for it. It will be a great weekend full of golf, rugby and celebrating our great club.”

As with every year, the Reef Raiders are now recruiting players for the new season. The club has a large turn over of players each season and regularly relies on backpackers coming to town to help boost numbers.

“Each season we rebuild our team. It’s challenging but at the same time we get the opportunity to bring together players from all over the world to play together in FNQ.”

Tickets for the 25 year reunion are now on sale through Eventbrite.
