Dozens of car owners have taken to social media to claim using the Port Douglas Car Wash at Craiglie has damaged paintwork and trim on their vehicles, with some proposing action to have repairs paid for.

An anonymous post made on the Port Douglas-Mossman Notice Board on Sunday, August 31, sparked a flurry of comments.

The post read: “Has anyone else found the new automated car wash in Craiglie jets a bit too aggressive? It stripped some of the paint off my car, and even damaged the paint on my personalised plate. I’ve been using this car wash for years, and the old system never caused any issues. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem?”

Newsport has confirmed with management of the Port Douglas Car Wash it is aware of the complaints and alleged damage to vehicles and that the issue was being discussed with the owners.

Among the allegations made about damage to vehicles was that it had peeled off the clear film on the bonnet of Kay Sawyer’s car, leaving a $800 repair bill.

Bella Baxter said: “I had issues recently, my car needs to be buffed after going through their car wash, I’ve got black marks all down the sides that will not come out! Never had a problem before.’’

While Peter Scuteri says a sign provides some warning: “Yes, same with my car, paint peeling in certain spots. New machines in place, I believe there is a sign up stating it is high pressure.’’

Another comment, from Elke Williams, said the jets had ripped off her number plate and damaged window trims.

The comments also called on people impacted to report the problem.

Mandy Jayne wrote: “Everyone commenting here should contact the car wash management asap and let them know. They have a duty of care, but may not actually know there is a problem. It needs to be reported before it causes any more damage.’’
