A new kind of festival arrived in the Far North this month, swapping alcohol, drugs, and loud noise for a day of mindful connection.
Held at Kuranda Amphitheatre, Connect Fest drew people to the rainforest for music, movement, and above all, connection.
The weather set the perfect scene; warm sunshine, a soft breeze, and birdsong creating a natural soundtrack.
Founder Josh Williams dreamed of capturing the magic of festivals without their usual chaos, with the event built around four pillars: connection to self, others, nature, and culture.
“It’s all about bringing people closer together,” Josh says.
The day was paced by workshops, talks, and guided activities.
Attendees moved at their own speed.
Some sat quietly in the grass, soaking up the atmosphere, while others joined sessions that blended personal stories, group reflections, and exercises encouraging the release of limiting beliefs and fostering genuine bonds.
The day unfolded as a collective journey of growth, trust, and healing.
As the sun climbed higher, meditation, breathwork, and mindful movement helped people release tension and deepen self-awareness.
Facilitators guided playful activities that inspired free movement and authentic interactions, filling the amphitheatre with laughter and warmth. From start to finish, the vibe was gentle and welcoming.
Judgement was left behind, replaced by easy smiles and natural self-expression.
As the day progressed, so did the energy and the ease of connection among attendees.
Beyond the activities, artisan stalls offered handmade treasures, and a tempting spread of vegetarian food nourished both body and soul.
Fragrant homemade coconut curry, fresh smoothies, wholesome bowls, coffee, and cocoa created a feast as vibrant as the surrounding rainforest.
The day’s high point came with the ecstatic dance: a phone-free, sober celebration of freedom and expression.
The music carried dancers from gentle rhythms to wild, joyful chaos before easing into a calm close.
Laughter, cheers, and whoops filled the air as everyone surrendered to the shared rhythm.
Though intimate, Connect Fest felt expansive, like a secret whispered beneath the trees.
“It wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing support from staff, volunteers, and the presenters who guided everyone through such an immersive day,” Josh says.
His vision for the future is ambitious: a multi-day festival with camping, deeper workshops, and even more time to build meaningful connections.
For me, lucky enough to be there, Connect Fest was more than just an event.
It was an invitation to step beyond my comfort zone and into a more authentic world.
A reminder that, at our core, all we truly need is love.
Connect Fest returns in August 2026, promising even deeper connection and growth. Follow on Instagram and join the 2026 waitlist for your chance to win two tickets.
