Police, dogs and a citizen hero recognised
Far North Bravery
Far North District police officers, 18 in total, along with five former Police Dogs and one member of the public have been recognised for their bravery and dedication to the Queensland community, at the Far North District Honours and Awards Ceremony on Friday.
Among the recipients were officers who received the Bravery Medal, National Medals, and Queensland Police Service Medals.
Mr Nicolas Hopwood was awarded an Assistance Commissioner’s Certificate for providing support to first responders during an incident at Trinity Beach on 23 January, 2024.
An international female tourist entered the water and was located unconscious. Mr Hopwood commenced CPR alongside other bystanders.
First responders who attended the scene said without the swift actions of Mr Hopwood and other first responders, it was likely the woman would not have survived.
Constable Matthew Bartlett was awarded the Queensland Police Bravery Medal, after he helped disarm a woman in a vehicle on 22 April, 2024.
The woman allegedly threatened police with a large hunting knife after crashing into a traffic light pole, with her children inside the vehicle.
Constable Bartlett entered the vehicle and helped restrain the woman, before moving the children to safety.
Police Dogs Hahm, Thor, Xander, Conan and Ki were posthumously awarded the QPS Canine Service Medal in recognition of their significant contribution to the QPS and the wider community.
Far Northern Region Assistant Commissioner Brett Schafferius said he was immensely proud of the commitment and dedication of the award recipients.
“These awards are some of my favourite days as Assistant Commissioner, it’s incredibly special to recognise the hard work, bravery and professionalism of these police, police dogs and community members,” Assistant Commissioner Schafferius said.
“Each officer and civilian has a story of selfless service, which highlights their dedication to keeping our community safe.
“I continue to be amazed by the courage and teamwork our members demonstrate under challenging and dynamic circumstances.”
