SPORT DIGEST: Muddies ready to reset during the Christmas break
Around grounds
The Muddies cricket teams had two losses on the weekend in the last round before the Christmas break.
The Third Grade side travelled to Trinity Beach to face Barron River on Saturday.
Captain Adrian Bannerman won the toss and batted on a beautiful day with a light sea breeze blowing across the ground.
The pitch was a bit up and down, but the outfield was lightning fast if you managed to beat the infield.
The out-of-form Thirds batting line-up once again lost too many early wickets, and was in big trouble at 6/44 before Jackson Hopkins helped add some respectability to the score with a well-compiled 39.
He was supported at the other end by Bannerman (19) and Kenny Lockhart (9 not out) to help the Muddies post something to bowl at - finishing all out for 116 in the 34th over.
But the Barron batsmen had little trouble chasing down the runs, finishing on 4/117 in the 24th over.
The Fourth Grade team lined up on Sunday at home on a special day set aside for a fundraiser for local sports club stalwart Darren Wall, who is battling cancer.
Winning the toss and batting, the Fourths were going along well at 0/45, but the loss of Keel Sorensen (10) triggered a collapse, with the team finishing all out for 81 in the 27th over.
Captain Shaun Anderson top-scored with 42.
Mulgrave chased down the runs in the 25th over with four wickets down, with those dismissals shared evenly among the bowlers.
The competition resumes on January 11.
