A Cooya Beach resident has had a close encounter with a 3.5m python, sticking around long enough to capture footage of the huge reptile.

Beth Treloar Gomez discovered the Australian scrub python on her fence, and had the length independently verified by an expert.

“Due to the fruit bats on Lou Price Drive, and the rain, this one has found its way into the area,” she told Newsport.

The largest snake species in Australia, the scrub python is found throughout the rainforests of tropical Far North Queensland.

Some can grow to 8m and weigh more than 25kg.
