A 57-year-old Hopevale man has been arrested after a 45-year-old man was last week struck by a car while walking along Flierl Street, with the driver fleeing the scene.

At about 6pm on Thursday, July 10, the 45-year-old was walking along Flierl Street, when he was hit by a car and then rushed to a medical clinic for treatment of minor injuries.

Police found a 57-year-old man a short time afterwards and made him blow in the bag.

He was then taken to Cooktown Police Station, where the alcohol reading was recorded as 0.109.

The man was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, drink driving and failing to remain at an incident and render assistance.

He is due to appear at the Cooktown Magistrates Court on Wednesday, August 6.
