A two-car crash on the Captain Cook Highway near Oak Beach is disrupting southbound traffic driving from the Port Douglas regions towards Cairns.

The crash, which happened this afternoon, involved the cars running into each other, with one then hitting a tree, a witness said.

There is no word on whether there has been any injuries, but drivers are being warned to proceed with caution and avoid the area where possible.

The witness said the cars are off the highway, so traffic is getting through despite being banked up.

A State Government Traffic and Main Roads Department update from about 1.15pm states “road open with caution” from Oak Beach to Buchans Point.

The update states that all lanes are affected in both directions, and delays are expected.

There are single-lane closures in multiple locations and speed reductions in place, TMR states.
