A groundbreaking new docuseries, You Can’t Do That In The Bush, is showcasing radical regional innovation and turning heads as it goes about it.

Launched in Cairns on Tuesday this week, the pilot episode title Plastic Fantastic tells the story of Torres Strait and Cairns locals tackling the global plastic waste crisis from their own backyard - the ocean.

Featuring Connor Clarke from Plastics Pirate and Dennis Fay of Salty Monkeys, the episode reveals a full-circle solution to marine pollution, converting ghost nets and plastic debris into usable products and high-grade fuel.

But for Mareeba and Port Douglas locals, the excitement doesn’t end there. Episode 2 will spotlight Sonlia Fashion, the beloved millinery label based in Mareeba, known for its stunning handcrafted headwear and creative leadership under founder Liana Hastey.

“This series is about smashing outdated assumptions about the bush,” says associate producer Laticia Braving, the driving force behind the project.

“From marine innovation to high-end fashion, regional Australia is full of unexpected brilliance - and we’re here to celebrate it.”

Produced by regional storytellers Blue Clay Creatives in collaboration with HOLGRO, the series celebrates authentic stories of resilience, ingenuity, and grassroots leadership from across remote and regional Australia.

“We’re so proud to be sharing Liana’s story in a future episode,” says Braving. “Sonlia Fashion is proof that you can build something world-class from the heart of the Tablelands, and look damn good doing it.”

The pilot episode is followed by a national release via YouTube. Industry, community and creative partners are invited to support or commission future episodes.
