Karen shows a way to reduce plastic waste
Letter to the editor
Regular Port Douglas resident Karen Luscombe has some real concerns about rubbish on Four Mile Beach, and ideas on how the disturbing discarded plastics might be able to be reduced. Here’s her letter to the editor.
I've been coming to Port Douglas for 25 years and I have property here.
I walk Four Mile Beach most mornings while I'm here. The thing I have noticed in the last seven years is the amount of plastic that gets washed up on the beach.
Obviously some days are worse than others depending on the weather conditions. On my return I pick up the rubbish. It's not rubbish dropped by people, it's come from the sea.
I've attached photos from two different days. The most common item I pick up are plastic bottle top lids.
The things I don't see any more are plastic straws. So the banning of them has worked.
In Europe plastic bottle tops are tethered to the bottle. You have to twist it & turn it to access the drink. Saving the environment of this common waste.
Maybe you could contact the manufacturers of plastic bottles and see when they are intending to bring this into Australia.
