Captain Cook night works start date announced
Shire roads
The start date for night closures of Captain Cook Highway for up to half an hour at a time has been confirmed by the State Government Transport and Main Roads Department (TMR).
From Monday, November 10, roadworks between Cairns and Port Douglas are set to be stepped up between the hours of 6pm and 6am until the morning of Saturday, November 15, which will require longer closures of the road to traffic than are currently taking place.
The night closures will then continue from Monday to Friday, 6pm-6am, until further notice.
“We ask road users to plan their journeys in advance as TMR anticipates delays of up to 30 minutes in some instances where extended holds are required at night works traffic control points,” TMR states.
“Traffic will be released at every safe and convenient opportunity to minimise delays where possible.”
The announcement comes after TMR stated earlier this month longer night-time delays were likely from the end of October.
About a third of the Highway road repairs have now been completed, with 20 sites being worked on simultaneously.
Up to 60 workers have been involved in the Captain Cook Highway roadworks during the dry-season schedule.
The closure program is designed to fit in with the tourism industry, with works also taking place at the same time on other key roads into and around Douglas Shire, including the Kuranda Range Road and the Mossman to Mount Molloy Road.
