When luxury superyacht Lumir glides into Port Douglas at the start of next month, young Captain Charlie Kinder will be behind the wheel.

Captain Kinder, who took command of the Lumir at just 21, is one of fewer than 2 per cent of female superyacht captains in the world.

She says she has had to forge her way forward in a male-dominated industry.

"The maritime industry is still, unfortunately, very biased,” she says.

“I had to work hard to earn respect.”

Raised in the Whitsundays, Captain Kinder grew up on the water.

“Being a captain isn't rocket science,” she says.

“It's about calm problem-solving, prioritising safety, and supporting your crew.

“If you have those qualities and the resilience to push through the barriers, then you absolutely can succeed in this career."

The Lumir is a 37m Heesen-made boat, and is set to become the largest superyacht for charter in Port Douglas.

With overnight accommodation for up to 10 guests in four ensuite cabins, and the capacity for 55 guests on day charters, she is suited for multi-day escapes, exclusive celebrations, and corporate events.

There is also formal dining, a poker table, a jacuzzi, a cocktail bar, jet skis, Fliteboards and paddleboards.

The Lumir is available for private hire from October 1-November 15. For details go to visitportdouglasdaintree.com.
