Traveller Award honours Forever Reef Project for sustainable tourism
GLOBAL RECOGNITION

Port Douglas’ very own Forever Reef Project has been honoured with a Traveller Award for Sustainability, highlighting the region as a global leader in conservation and sustainable tourism.
Run by Great Barrier Reef Legacy at Port Douglas Marina, it is the world’s first living coral biobank, housing diverse coral species to ensure their survival.
The Traveller Sustainability Awards, published on 19 September 2025, highlighted nine other destinations worldwide, including nearby Mount Mulligan Lodge.
The awards are selected solely by the Traveller’s editorial team, based on sustainability impact; businesses cannot nominate themselves.
Jenna Rumney, Co-founder of GBR Legacy, described the recognition as both humbling and motivating.
“It’s incredibly rewarding. We’ve poured so much energy and passion into building the Forever Reef Project from the ground up, and to be recognised with this award feels like a huge acknowledgment of that effort,” she said.
“More than anything, it’s a reminder that people value and support what we’re trying to achieve, safeguarding the biodiversity of the Great Barrier Reef for generations to come,” she added.
The award shines an international spotlight on the innovative coral conservation work happening in Port Douglas, reinforcing the region’s status as not just a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef but a leader in sustainable tourism.
Ms Rumney said it is “a proud moment for the community,” giving visitors the chance to experience something “truly one-of-a-kind on a global scale.”
She also noted the broader impact of the award.
“This recognition helps us reach new audiences, both visitors and partners who can support and expand our impact.
“It opens doors for more collaboration, greater visibility in the sustainable tourism space, and hopefully increased visitation to our new facility in Port Douglas.
“Every person who walks through our doors helps us tell the story of why coral conservation matters, and that ripple effect is invaluable.”
