YOU SAID IT! Council crackdown in our Shire streets
Letters and comments

There simply aren’t enough residential properties with the space to accommodate things like caravans or boats. As a real estate agent, buyers are looking for this all the time and often they have to compensate by keeping their toys on the street - not by preference.
In TNQ, lifestyle is everything. Many people choose to live here for the outdoor lifestyle - boating, camping and naturally, that comes with owning the equipment to support it. With already limited non-rural options, it’s challenging enough for buyers to secure a suitable property without further restrictions.
On top of that, the rising cost of living is already stretching household budgets, making off-site storage an added expense many simply can’t justify right now - when, if anything, people need a bit of financial relief wherever possible. While I understand that poorly positioned caravans or boats can create visibility or safety concerns, this should be assessed on a case-by-case basis rather than applying a blanket approach that impacts the majority of residents who store their property responsibly.

Simple solution. Crash it off the side of the highway (or any random shire road) and then slap a “police aware” sticker on it. You can then leave it there for weeks. Or months in some cases.
Christopher Saint
It’s interesting that there are RVs parked on the road in PD that have never been moved in weeks but presumably they are exempt from this?
Benjamin Bobbermein
How about people cleaning the nature strip and cutting there hedges back to the fence line?
Kayla Mills
What about the ILLEGAL ‘campers/squatters’ on the road to Cairns? Or are they a protected species? One female certainly doesn’t pay rates… probably never has.

It’s registered... so bugger off
Caroline Arcus
We have parking restrictions in our main streets with no one to take responsibity to monitor them.
Danielle Reilly
Come on. How are we enjoying our back yard if we can’t?
Sharon Sexton
How about they crack down on all the backpackers sleeping and setting up table and chairs outside their vans on Warner St?
What’s going on with Pebbly Beach?
Barney Swan
Fingers crossed they do a great job and this becomes a welcome to the Shire that we are all proud of. Finding the middle between practical design and respect for aesthetics & biodiversity is no easy job.

Should have been done YEARS ago and it never have got to this and the trees could have been saved. The rocks were stored on the headland behind the patch of scrub at least 20 years ago.

It’s only going to be washed away with the next big tides and storms. They’ll be looking for a new route soon once the coastal road is eroded.
Annie Taylor
What turn it into rocky beach! What about the original pebbles they will be gone? It's the only place with the beautiful pebbles. A place when one can sit in peace & quiet. Can't believe Cairns Shire!
EDITOR'S NOTE: As a main road, Captain Cook Highway is the jurisdiction of the State Government, while Pebbly Beach is in Douglas Shire.
Diane Cole-Street
If they don't do something in that space the road will completely disappear over time due to erosion of the foreshore.
Brodie’s doing big things
