Cassowaries have been capturing the attention and hearts of Daintree locals and visitors as a "flock of dinosaurs” cruise through Daintree Rainforest Village daily.
Village owner Janelle Moore reports the start of 2026 has welcomed the greatest number of the fascinating creatures, along with their super-cute chics, she has seen in recent years.
And, a familiar face, Coco, has returned after not being seen for a little while.
Coco is a well known cassowary in the Diwan area of the Daintree and is recognised by locals as a successful parent. He is estimated to be about 40 years old.
In one of their posts (pictured) Janelle gives an idea of just how many of the birds there are currently frequenting Daintree Rainforest Village.
“So many cassowaries out and about in the Daintree Rainforest Village, six individuals on site here today.
“Exciting, hair raising, entertaining. We are feeling so privileged to witness this flock of dinosaurs on our Daintree property.
“Three in the image, plus two posturing adults and a hilarious teenager goosing around.’’
Daintree Siesta has also shared video footage of a leisurely stroll down the road by a Cassowary and two chics.
Locals have ruled out the pictured cassowary being Coco due to his distinct appearance.
"Who knows who this fella is but he is a beauty," Janelle says.
The pictured cassowary did originally have three chics, but one was unfortunately recently killed on the road.
"The message is drive slow," Janelle says.
