Kuranda night closures complete triple whammy for high season Shire road access

The Kuranda Range Road is set to be fully closed for five nights per week for close to two months as a new round of night works takes place from the start of August.
The news comes as long-suffering Far North Queensland drivers found out last week that the other main road into Douglas Shire, the Captain Cook Highway, will also be subject to night works from Monday, July 20, up until mid September, and the Mowbray River Bridge will also be undergoing repairs - all during the high tourism season.
Kuranda Range Road is set to be closed at night from 9pm to 4am on Sundays to Thursdays from Sunday, August 2, to Thursday, September 24, to help fix the major downslope slip below Henry Ross Lookout.
Traffic will only be let through once in each direction at midnight.
Workers will be paving the road, installing a new guardrail and doing other jobs requiring a full road closure to ensure worker safety, the Transport and Main Roads Department (TMR) states.
The State Government also announced in its recent budget further funding for the replacement of the Barron River Bridge near Kuranda, which is a joint Federal and State Government project.
Construction of the two-lane bridge, which will be built downstream from the current one, is scheduled to begin in early 2028 and be open by 2031.
