The Mossman lawn bowls fours club championship was won 28-19 by Mick Frese, Dick Pitt, Peter Busch and Malachy McTaggart on Saturday.
Trailing early, the quartet came storming home for the seven-shot win, with state under-25 player McTaggart landing some brilliant bowls late in the match as team skipper.
The four will now represent Mossman at the district championships at Atherton this Saturday morning.
The singles winners at Mossman last Saturday were M Girgenti and D White.
In Jackpot Bowls, Jimmy Wong and Craig Metters won +6, Bill Allison, Terry Richards and Bill Smith won +26 and the winners on the day were Warren McCoist, Richard Anderson and Col Widdows +28.
AFL Cairns
The Port Douglas Crocs continued on their winning ways on Saturday, trouncing last year’s premiers North Cairns Tigers by 139 points at North Cairns.
With the final score 24.19 (163) to 3.6 (24), the Crocs led at every change to coast to victory.
New recruit Shay Linke snared 10 goals in a dominant performance in front of goal, while Brodie Francis kicked four.
Murphy Short and Tom Cantwell both got 38 disposals, while Ben McPhee got 30 and Linke 29.
In the women’s game, the Crocs went down 2.1 (13) to 10.7 (67), with captain Caity McPhee racking up 38 disposals and kicking one of the two goals.
The Port Douglas teams have the bye this weekend.
Rugby league
Mossman Sharks had a narrow 24-30 loss to seventh-placed Ivanhoe Knights on Saturday.
“The fight, resilience and commitment shown right until the end is something to be proud of,” a club spokesperson stated.
Cameron Hooker, Thaddius Minniecon, Robert Garrett, Jarvis Connolly and Iyona Mundraby all scored tries.
In the early game, the women’s team suffered an 8-72 loss to the Knights, with captain Keasharn Sands-Hart scoring both tries.
The women play the Kangaroos at home this Friday night from 6.40pm, while the men face Cairns Brothers away on Saturday.
Gaelic football
The Four Mile Gaelic football association celebrated its one-year anniversary last week with an exhibition match and an awards presentation at Port Douglas oval.
The club has enjoyed some remarkable successes in its short existence, including competing at the national championships and having player Brodie Francis selected for the Australian team.
Francis is heading to Ireland this month to compete at the world championships.
Soccer
Douglas United is scheduled to play Edge Hill at home in Cassowary Park this Friday at 8.30pm.
Rugby union
The Reef Raiders play at home at Port Douglas oval this Saturday from 4pm against the Northern Beaches Mudcrabs.
