The best of Far North fisho fashions
FNQ in Focus
They are a Fisho Fashion statement, and the unofficial uniform of any Cape York traveller… long-sleeved, colourful and even a little bit crazily designed UV protection tops.
But which whistlestop town and roadhouse has the best and boldest design of them all?
If you ask Coen Store and Servo’s Ehsan Gill, he cannot go past the cartoon-style, bike riding wild pig design of the town, giving it a big double-thumbs up.
The story behind the design is that Coen had a “resident” wild pig which was well known around the town - not to be mistaken with the Brahman bull which wanders about the place.
And, there’s no shortage of adventurous motorcycle riders heading through the central Cape location on the way to the Tip.
Thrown in a dusty, corrugated track, a croc or two and some directional signs to tell you where you are, and where you need to go, and you have a design worthy of hanging in your wardrobe until the next trip to outback Far North Queensland (this article writer can validate that).
But they’re not all cartoon inspired designs. Musgrave Roadhouse has a couple of designs, one featuring the iconic roadhouse itself, with the other a bit more generic, coupling the track, some 4WD adventure and a barramundi… appropriate for what is essentially fishing attire.
A bit further up the track and the Archer River Roadhouse collection features pigs, crocs and cars, with another giving you a map in the event you are lost on the fabulous last true frontier of Cape York.
While the Fisho Fashion is not seen so obviously in Port Douglas, despite plenty of time on the water in our neck of the woods, we wonder if it is time for the designers to conjure up our locally themed shirts… even if just for a bit of fun.
The designers behind the Muddies cricket attire would seem a good crew to throw the ball to for a shot at it, while there’s no shortage of artistic talent in town who could hit the mark.
We’ve had a crack at a design but we’d love to see your efforts and your favourite Fisho Fashion of Far North Queensland too.
