Mossman war memorial all set for $50,000 upgrade
Honouring fallen
The unknown soldier statuette on top of the Mossman war memorial is set to grow taller thanks to a more than $50,000 grant from the Federal Government.
Currently standing at about 40cm, the figure on top of the cenotaph out the front of the Douglas Shire Council chambers is set to be replaced by a more than 1m statuette.
Federal Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Minister Matt Keogh and Leichhardt MP Matt Smith travelled to Mossman yesterday to meet the local RSL members who pushed for the memorial upgrade, including secretary Wally Gray and President John Grime.
“It will set the Shire cenotaph up for the next 50 years,” Mr Grime said.
He said everyone at the Mossman RSL was grateful for the Federal Government grant.
“Despite us being so far north the Government still supports us.”
RSL members including Mr Gray, Mr Grime, vice president Peter Watts and former president Ron Savage have been working tirelessly to improve the memorial in the past few years, including new paving being installed at the site, which was unveiled last year.
The group is hoping the new statuette will be in place before Remembrance Day in November.
