Several large trees on the eastern side of the Mossman Library are in the firing line following a plan to build a new $70,000 outdoor space next to the building.

An application for a $50,000 grant has been submitted to the State Government to build the space on a strip of land between the eastern side of the library and the house next door, which would be used for events such as outdoor kids’ book reading and services such as using mobile phones.

In last week’s council meeting, the councillors voted to support the plan, with Cr Abigail Noli saying it may breathe new life into an unused piece of land.

“It’s a great idea, wholeheartedly support this, and I actually look forward to seeing the outcome when it’s finished,” Cr Noli said.

The proposal includes: removing the trees on the boundary and replacing the fence; installing a door to enable access to the outside area; relocating power cables; repairing the patio; installing guttering, and; putting down a concrete slab.

The report tabled in the meeting stated opening the outdoor space would also allow for school-holiday activities, “messy play”, and a space where users can eat and socialise.

The council would contribute about $20,000 to remove the trees and move the fence.

“The removal of the trees on the boundary will have some environmental impact,” the report states.

“However, the trees currently pose some threat to the library building, as well as the neighbouring property.

“More appropriate landscaping for the space can be implemented as part of the project.”
