Jeremy Aitken is a writer based in Kuranda and The Bike is a work of literary fiction grounded in lived experience. The Bike was shortlisted for the Vogel / Australian Literary Award in 2006, and it has taken nearly two decades to complete. Jeremy moved from Sydney to Far North Queensland just over a year ago, and FNQ is now his home. It was only after relocating here, and spending time in the quiet of the rainforest, that he was able to return to the manuscript and finally complete it. The Bike explores men on the edge, addiction, masculinity, class, and survival, and the often-unseen humanity and poetry that exists inside those lives. Rather than offering a neat redemptive arc, the work focuses on endurance, recognition, and ethical witnessing. "I’d like to speak about the long journey of The Bike, writing from lived worlds, and how place, particularly Far North Queensland, shapes reflection, storytelling, and the responsibility of representing marginalised experiences with care." | Mossman Library | Free | 07 4099 9496 | [email protected] | Community Event, Free Event | Douglas Libraries | [email protected] | 07 4099 9496 | |||
