A 72-year-old Atherton man has been charged with alleged murder following the suspicious death of a 65-year-old woman in Atherton yesterday morning.

A 72-year-old man will appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court tomorrow after being charged with the alleged murder of a 65 year-old woman in Atherton yesterday morning.

Police were called to a Gordon St address in Atherton at around 8.30am and located a deceased female with an alleged wound to her abdomen.

Police set up a crime scene and confirmed " detectives continue to work to determine the circumstances leading up to the woman’s death".
